My controversional personal opinion & why I’ve personally left-
The staff team (particularly management) are 100% the reason the server has died. Some have given up and those that are still active who do care don’t have either the power (due to disagreements from other members in the team), or the time to contribute. I don’t want to be doing this and I won’t, but I can name 3 admins who could leave and absolutely nothing would change from a players perspective. It 100% does not help that Tedde isn’t around, an active owner makes an active server.
Looking back, however much we all disliked him, I truly wish we had an owner like Magnus. At least he had the time to contribute and wasn’t scared to make large changes. Will leave the rest for my leaving post (which is scary to make after playing for 10 years up until last year, I’ve been watching the SRV channel from a distance since and realised that the lack of announcements is unstable and cannot continue). I’m 100% biased in saying this and comparing this to friends who are admins in thousand+ player servers, who actively engage with the community, but those servers also have entire development teams. It’s truly amazing seeing what some servers can achieve, but HM is now locked into Slimefun and Denizen for a vanilla experience. MC has developed a lot since the early days, and it’s simply not enough anymore.
To be active, Tedde needs to leave. Sorry.
A lot I agree with you Herd. Here are some:
Now you could throw weak arguments at a lot of those points but that is generally what players experience. You could fix a lot of these issues by rejuvenating the staff team and having someone in charge that will say look <admin/tech> if you’re not going to be active then we’ll have to let you go but you can always be invited back should your social life change. The attitude at the moment is ‘the inactivity rule doesn’t apply to upper staff’. I understand the false argument that everyone has their own lives but if you haven’t got time for the server then don’t waste ours by not contributing. Let someone else drive change.
Tedde was never active in upper staff although he is contactable. I’m not sure the server completely belongs to him, just the concept but Luc is the one paying the bills. Between them, they’re just going to have to be tough on admin/tech team and say buck up your ideas or be replaced. At least Tedde’s mate, Magnus, had ideas and some kind of minigames style bungee set up was his end goal from what we learned. That I think was why people moaned to Tedde.
There’s a lot of ideas on this forum thread about what went wrong and what could work and this post has been revived a few times now and revived recently by Camel due to inactivity, ironically before server went down again. The 1 or 2 active techs (probably Luc) and maybe an admin are feeling the pressure right now to fix the server and I’m sure doing the best they can. Once the server is back, maybe there should be a review in upper staff and some kind of agreement on a way forward with a dedicated team responsible for different areas of the server maybe. You can’t all bloody manage everything all at once together otherwise you’ll all do nothing and be scared to change anything lol.
A tutorial that is never finished after years of staff saying they’re going to finish it.
As one of the people who is working on what I’m calling the next ‘New Player Induction’ - which includes the Tutorial, I have to wait until I both have the energy and the ability to concentrate on getting it done, as I find it easier to work on something when I’m hyperfocusing. It doesn’t help I am starting to display symptoms of what are likely some form of chronic illness more often now.
I wish I could do more, but it’s a case of what stuff do I need to prioritize energy on personally, hence why there’s not been a Horizon Awards in 6 months - or why I’m semi-inactive
. I try my best when I do have energy, and I’d rather be able to not have to justify why I am inactive or slow at making progress at every corner right now.
Yeah it’s not a criticism of one person or your efforts but the fact that discussion of not advertising because we’re working on a new tutorial has been the line for a few years now.
I think an issue I’m seeing now more than ever before is how people pick up these projects and then fail to delegate tasks to others for them especially if they don’t have the time to do things themselves. Even talking to some staff I hear oh so and so does that or so and so has to do this or is in charge of it so have to wait on them. This then leads to departments that die or no longer exist anymore because they depend on an inactive person. Why is this now the case? Staff is a team and I think at times people are either scared to let others help with something or maybe people are scared to offer help. Not picking on you edge specifically I get there are likely things only you can do to move this forward.
Yeah, that’s fair. I do hope to push the wiki more once it’s back up (since it’s sadly still down due to other issues), and possibly hire a third Wiki Editor to the department.
Also, in terms of the Wiki thing, it’s also an opportunity for other players and the likes to be able to provide their own guides in the Guides category - which is linked to in the New Player Induction area (I shall provide more context when the Wiki returns
). I am also planning on pushing staff to let me have (even just limited) backend access to the Wiki as afaik, the only other person who knows how to use the backend of the software we use for it (MediaWiki - it’s no secret lmao) is Luc, and maybe Cheer.
